Washington, DC Cinema History

The Langston Theater was built in 1946. It was among the first cinemas to allow African Americans. The theater closed in the late 1970s and was eventually demolished.

Bring Back ‘The Strand’ As A Theater

Ward 7 is a ‘cultural desert.’ There are too few restaurants. There are no cinemas or cultural spaces for visual art exhibitions, lectures, or performances. The few remaining historic theaters buildings are unrecognizable, their original glory long forgotten. They are monuments to another era when the exact same neighborhoods were more economically empowered, less racially diverse, and considered far more desirable. Could we bring back ‘The Strand’ as a theater?
